The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly. It aims to accelerate the transition toward a sustainable food system that protects the environment and promotes human health. It seeks to achieve a neutral or positive environmental impact, contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, reverse biodiversity loss, and ensure that all citizens have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, and sustainable food. At the same time, it aims to keep food affordable, support fair economic returns along the food chain, enhance the competitiveness of the EU food sector, and promote fair trade.
One of the most promising pathways toward achieving its ambitious targets—ranging from reduced greenhouse gas emissions to improved public health—is the promotion and integration of plant-based foods into mainstream diets. Compared to animal agriculture, plant-based food systems have a diminished impact on the environment. The European Commission notes that food production is responsible for nearly a third of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, and animal farming intensifies the problem. Europe can shift its carbon footprint alongside soil and water resource conservation by increasing the consumption of legumes, grains, fruits, and vegetables which mirrors sustainability goals outlined in the Farm to Fork Strategy.
Furthermore, the expansion and acceptance of plant-based ingredients play an important role in safeguarding food security. The production of plant-based foods is often less resource intensive, making it possible to farm them all over Europe. This leads to healthier and more accessible food for the public.
Innovation and research are vital in driving this transition. Within the Plant Power project, the focus is on initiating and sharing a transformative, replicable model of learning that empowers VET educators and SMEs with the innovation and entrepreneurial skills needed to respond to the growing demand for plant-based food products. The project provides accessible training on how to transition into plant-based food production chains in line with the EU Farm to Fork Strategy. By equipping participants with practical knowledge and tools, Plant Power supports the development of a more sustainable food system while helping SMEs capitalize on the expanding market for plant-based innovations.
Equally important are education and advocacy. Engaging citizens, policymakers, and industry stakeholders is essential in reshaping European food culture and accelerating innovation at all levels.
As we continue to share knowledge and breakthroughs through the Plant Power project, we remain fully committed to supporting the EU’s vision of a sustainable, resilient food system—one where plant-based solutions play a leading role in shaping the future.
